Downtown Newton Halloween Spooktacular is Oct. 29

NEWTON, NC (October 26, 2011) – If you and your children are looking for some Halloween fun, bring your little ghouls and goblins to the Honey’s Downtown Newton Halloween Spooktacular on Saturday evening, Oct. 29, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Activities will center around the 1924 Courthouse Square, and will include costume contests, games, prizes, trick-or-treating at local merchants, and “trunk or treat.”

UPDATE: Grace Reformed Church will offer free hotdogs and Peoples Bank will have free potato chips. A vendor will also be at the event selling popcorn, candy corn, candy apples, etc.

One of the main highlights of the evening is the Newton Parks & Recreation Department’s “Halloween Costume Contest” which will begin at 6:30 p.m. The contest will feature two categories, original (handmade) and commercial, with one winner in each of the following age groups: 0-3, 4-7, 8-12, 13-17, and 18+. Entries will be accepted until 6:00 p.m. that evening. Each participant will receive a goody bag.

Area residents are invited to attend Spooktacular for safe trick-or-treating. Local churches, businesses, and civic organizations are encouraged to join in this community event. The goal of the event is to provide an old-fashioned fall festival that is family-friendly, featuring storefront decorations, Halloween-themed inflatables, games, and candy. More than 1,500 pounds of candy was distributed last year.

In addition, fall scene costume photos will be taken again this year, and will be available for free download on the City’s Flickr page.

This year’s Spooktacular is sponsored by Honey’s IGA Supermarkets of Newton and Vale. The event is hosted by the Newton Merchants Group, the Newton Festival & Events Committee, and the Newton Parks & Recreation Department.

If your church, organization, or business is interested in participating in the “trunk or treat,” call Festival & Events Committee Chairperson Catherine LeFevers at 828-464-8922 (evenings). For more information about the costume contest, contact the Newton Parks & Recreation Department at 828-695-4317.
