NEWTON, NC (Aug. 4, 2016) - The Newton Parks and Recreation Department has some great events coming up for people of all ages. Check out the upcoming events below!

Senior Citizens Dance
Put on your dancing shoes and head to the Newton Recreation Center for the annual Senior Citizens Dance.

The dance is hosted by the Newton Parks and Recreation Department and will be 7-11 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, on the lower level of the Newton Recreation Center, 23 South Brady Ave.

Anyone 55 years old or older is invited to enjoy live entertainment from Shake Down Band, a variety band. Soft drinks will be provided. Attendees are asked to bring finger foods to share.

Tickets will be $8 at the door. No advance tickets will be sold.

Cornhole Tournament
The Newton Parks and Recreation Department will host the 2016 Cornhole Tournament at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, in the parking lot of the Newton Recreation Center.

The round robin tournament is open to people 18 years old and older. The entry fee for a two-person team is $10. Winners will receive trophies courtesy of the Newton Recreation Department. Entry forms are available at the Newton Recreation Center and here.

Pet Mania
The Newton Parks and Recreation Department will host the 2016 Pet Mania at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17.

Pet owners and animal lovers are encouraged to attend and participate in Pet Mania on the west side of the 1924 Courthouse Square. Pet Mania is sponsored by the Newton Parks and Recreation Department and Conover Veterinary Hospital.

There will be nine categories in which to compete. The winners from each category will be eligible for Best of Show.

The deadline to enter is 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17. All pets must have proper vaccinations (with tags) to enter the event. Entry forms are available at the Newton Recreation Center and here.

Horseshoe Tournament
The Newton Parks and Recreation Department will host the 2016 Horseshoe Tournament at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at Westside/Jaycee Park.

The single-elimination tournament is open to people 16 years old and older. The entry fee for a two-person team is $10. Teams must register by 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18. Entry forms are available at the Newton Recreation Center and here.

27th Annual Southern Biscuit Soldiers Reunion 5K Run/Walk and One-Mile Fun Run
The Newton Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor the 27th Annual Southern Biscuit Soldiers Reunion 5K Run/Walk and One-Mile Fun Run on Saturday, Aug. 20.

The family friendly event will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Newton Recreation Center. The one-mile fun run is slated to begin at 8 a.m. prior to the 5K.   

Trophies will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in the 5K overall, as well as in each age division, with awards presented for first place only in each age division for the one-mile fun run.

Preregistration is $15 for the 5K run/walk and $10 for the one-mile fun run. Preregistration is open until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17. Late registration runs through 7:30 a.m. on race day for $20 for the 5K and $15 for the one-mile fun run.

30-60-100 Mile Century Bike Ride

The annual 30-60-100 Mile Century Bike Ride will be held Sunday, Aug. 21. The event begins with a mass start at the Newton Recreation Center at 8 a.m.

All bicycle rides will be conducted at each rider’s pace, with three ride lengths mapped throughout Catawba County. Each ride offers scenery and hills for cyclists to enjoy. The ride is open to everyone, but riders younger than 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while participating.

First aid, refreshments, T-shirts, and more will be provided for all participants.

Preregistration is $20 and will be accepted until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17. Late registration runs through 7:30 a.m. on ride day for $25.
