Walmart Neighborhood Market opens

IMGNEWTON, N.C. (Jan. 29, 2016) – Newton celebrated the opening of Walmart Neighborhood Market with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, Jan. 27.

The new store, located at 1818 Northwest Blvd., is open 24 hours a day and features a pharmacy and gas station.

“This is a wonderful day for Newton,” said Mayor Anne P. Stedman, adding that the Walmart Neighborhood Market will provide jobs to more than 100 employees. “They’ve turned a blighted area into a great investment, and I’d like to thank them for doing that.”

The store is at the former site of another grocery store which was vacant for several years before Walmart Neighborhood Market opened.

“We work hard to provide affordable food and products to the communities we serve,” said store manager Valencia Brown.

Brown said she is working to develop relationships with local organizations and charities. As part of the opening celebration, she presented checks for $2,000 to Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry and The Corner Table; checks for $1,000 to the Newton Police Department, the Newton Fire Department and Balls Creek Elementary School; and a check for $875 to Newton-Conover City Schools.

Elizabeth Weathers of Vale sang the “Star-Spangled Banner” and the Newton Police Department Honor Guard raised the flag beside the store’s front entrance before the doors opened to shoppers. Representatives from the Newton City Council and Catawba County Chamber of Commerce were on hand to celebrate the store’s grand opening.
