Newton and CVCC offer classes

NEWTON, N.C. - The Newton Parks and Recreation Department and Catawba Valley Community College are proud to present classes this fall and winter sure to interest you or someone you know. Classes will be held at the Newton Recreation Center and include:

quiltQuilting: Back to the Basics – You decide what size quilt and what pattern you want to make. You will start with the basics and go from there. This class is designed for beginning to intermediate students. The fee for the class is $45 per person. The class will be 9 a.m.-noon on Mondays from Sept. 14-Nov. 2. The instructor is Mary Ann Parkhurst.

Quilting: Back to the Basics Workshop – This is a continuation of the Quilting: Back to the Basics course. You decide what size quilt and what pattern you want to make. You will start with the basics and go from there. This class is designed for beginning to intermediate students. The fee for the class is $25 per person. The class will be 9 a.m.-noon on Mondays from Nov. 9-Nov. 30. The instructor is Mary Ann Parkhurst.

Needle Fun – This course instructs needle crafters of all skills levels. Variety is the spice of life in this class as participants choose which needle to use. It could be a knitting needle, an embroidery needle, or even a crochet hook. The class will be 9 a.m.-noon on Tuesdays from Sept. 15-Nov. 3. Cost for the class is $45. The instructor is Mary Ann Parkhurst.

Needle Fun Workshop – This is a continuation to the Needle Fun class. The course instructs needle crafters of all skills levels. Shag Dance: Beginning – The course will teach the dance of the South through the six count method. This course includes the basic shag step, female turn, male turn, chase, cuddle, pivot, lead out, and variations on the fundamental steps. The class will be 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays from Sept. 1-Oct. 6. Cost for the class is $55 per person. Partners are needed for the class.

stained glassStained Glass: Beginning I – Learn the fundamentals of stained glass design in this fun and entertaining class. You will learn how to choose the correct glass, create patterns, cut and grind glass, and complete two projects. A supply list is available prior to class. The approximate cost of supplies is $75. The class will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Mondays from Sept. 14-Oct. 19. The fee for the class is $50. The instructor is Melanie Zimmerman.

Stained Glass: Beginning II – Learn the fundamentals of stained glass design in this fun and entertaining class with an emphasis on lampshades. You will learn how to choose the correct glass, create patterns, cut and grind glass, and complete two projects. A supply list is available prior to class. The approximate cost of supplies is $75. The class will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Mondays from Nov. 2-Dec. 14. The fee for the class is $50. The instructor is Melanie Zimmerman.
