Shop Local Campaign comes to Newton

NEWTON, NC – The Downtown Newton Development Association (DNDA) will kick off its Shop Local Campaign on Saturday, Nov. 29, to champion the small businesses that make up Downtown Newton.

DNDA encourages shoppers to support local businesses through a special program supported by American Express. For several years American Express has promoted Small Business Saturday on Thanksgiving weekend.

“Our local businesses aren't just businesses,” said DNDA chairperson Josh Cummings, "They are our neighbors and friends that work hard each day to keep our city unique and special. We want to show our support for them and celebrate their hard work."

The American ExpressSmall Business Saturday PassportProgram promotes small businesses through consumer transactions. The passport is a simple booklet that patrons pick up at a main location and carry around to participating businesses within an area. Once at a participating business, staff will give customers a stamp for visiting or completing a transaction. The passport also acts as a discount card at participating businesses.

To join in support of local merchants, pick up a passport at Marie and Twannette’s Bakery and Cafe on the east side of the 1924 Courthouse Square on Saturday morning. Businesses offering one-day promotions will be listed in the passport. When you finish shopping, return the passport to Marie and Twannette’s for a chance to win one of several prize packs donated by downtown businesses.

If you’re turned off by the chaos and anxiety of “big box” shopping during this busy season, DNDA suggests finding the perfect remedy in Downtown Newton, where the frenzied crowds of large retail stores give way to smaller shops filled with unique gifts.

“The DNDA is here to help Downtown Newton businesses succeed in the current market. “ Cummings said. “We want to get people coming back to downtown and using small businesses before going to the box stores.”

The mission of DNDA is to create economic development in the city’s central business district and strengthen the unique characteristics that make Downtown Newton a vibrant destination.
