NEWTON, NC (March 27, 2014) – Celebrate Arbor Day with the City of Newton Tree Board as it plants a flowering Dogwood tree at Southside Park. The public is invited to attend the event at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 26.
The North Carolina Forest Service this year again recertified the City of Newton as a Tree City USA community. The Tree City USA program is a national program that provides the framework for community forestry management for cities and towns across the country. Communities achieve the cerfidication by meeting four core standards: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.
