Newton breaks ground on new fire station HQ

NEWTON, NC (Feb. 14, 2014) – The City of Newton on Friday moved forward with its plan to build a new fire station headquarters with a groundbreaking ceremony at 119 S. Brady Ave. The new fire station headquarters is approximately 21,000 square feet and will house five fire engine bays, training space and administrative offices of the Newton Fire Department.

Newton Mayor Anne P. Stedman stated, “The prospect of a new fire department headquarters has been an exhaustive investigation and discussion. It’s not an easy decision to make. The City Council has talked about construction of a new facility since 2000, and the current Council decided that the new fire department headquarters was no longer a want, but a pressing need.”

City Manager Todd Clark spoke of the relationship between the City and Catawba County as local governments work to protect the health, safety and welfare of their citizens.

“I am especially grateful to our City Council for recognizing the need to provide a modern facility that will enhance our firefighters’ ability to protect the public and benefit our citizens for many years to come,” Clark said.

Newton Fire Chief Kevin Yoder recognized all the people – from the City Council to firefighters to city officials – who worked hard to make the new fire station headquarters a reality.

“Many don’t realize what a fire station means to our firefighters,” Yoder said. “This is a place where they work, live and spend a third of their lives. This is a place that becomes a second home to many, and they take great pride in making their station and the whole department the best it can be.”

In January, the Newton City Council awarded a $2.8 million construction bid for the fire station headquarters to Denver Construction Company.  The City earlier contracted Winstead Architecture for the design, specifications, bidding and construction administration for the facility. The new fire station headquarters is scheduled for completion in early 2015.

The current fire station headquarters is located on West A Street. The city building was formerly used as a truck shed and was renovated in 1958 for the Fire Department’s use. The new fire station headquarters is the first facility constructed specifically to serve as headquarters for the Newton Fire Department.
