NEWTON, NC (Dec. 27, 2013) - The Newton Parks and Recreation Department and Catawba Valley Community College are proud to present classes which are sure to interest you or someone you know. Classes are held at the Newton Recreation Center, 23 S. Brady Ave.
Quilting: Back to the Basics – Participants will choose the size of quilts and patterns they will make during the class. The class is aimed at beginner to intermediate students and begins with quilting basics. The fee for the class is $45 per person. The class is held from 9 a.m. until noon Mondays, Feb. 24 – April 14. Instructor: Mary Ann Parkhurst.
Quilting: Back to the Basics Workshop – This is a continuation of the Back to the Basics Quilting course. The fee for the class is $25 per person. The class runs from 9 a.m. until noon Mondays, April 28 – May 19.
Needle Fun – This class offers variety as participants will choose their needle type – a knitting needle, an embroidery needle or a crochet hook. This class is for beginner to intermediate students. The fee for the class is $45 per person. The class is held from 9 a.m. until noon Tuesdays, Feb. 25 – April 15. Instructor: Mary Ann Parkhurst.
Needle Fun Workshop – This is a continuation of the Needle Fun course. The fee for the class is $25 per person. This class is for beginner to intermediate students. It is be held from 9 a.m. until noon Tuesdays, April 29 – May 20. Instructor: Mary Ann Parkhurst.
Intermediate Shag – This is a continuation of the Beginning Shag class. This class consists of double and triple six-count mirror patterns and includes the belly roll, sugar foot, over-arm pivot, triple basic, double turn and variations on these steps. Partners are needed for this class. The fee for the class is $55 per person. The class will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 25 – March 25. Instructor: Judy Boston.
Oil & Acrylic Painting – Start a new adventure with oil and acrylic painting. This class is designed for beginners and those who want to improve their painting skills. Emphasis is on color mixing, techniques, safety in using materials and learning to see color and composition. A supply list is available prior to the class. The class runs from 9 a.m. until noon Thursdays, Jan. 9 – Feb. 27. Instructor: Frances Bost.
Bird & Duck Carving - Decorative – Participants in the class will learn the process of taking a block of wood and carving, sanding and painting it into a life-like bird or duck. The class is limited to 15 students. The fee for the class is $50 per person. The first session is from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 15 – March 5 and the second session will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, March 19 – May 7. Instructor: Marshall Shook.
Stained Glass - Beginning – Learn the fundamentals of stained glass in this fun and entertaining class. Students will learn how to choose the correct glass, create patterns, cut and grind glass and complete two projects. Supplies will be discussed on the first night of class. The approximate supply fee is $75. The class will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 27 – March 3. Instructor: Melanie Zimmerman.
