Council Member Lawing re-elected to NCLM Board of Directors

NEWTON, NC (Nov. 5, 2013) – Newton City Council Member Mary Bess Lawing was re-elected during the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM) Annual Conference to serve on the NCLM Board of Directors. She will continue to serve as the League District 11 representative.

“It is my honor and privilege to serve as a director on the North Carolina League of Municipalities board of directors representing not only Newton but every town and city in the 11th District,” Lawing said. “This non-partisan board represents all the municipalities in the State of North Carolina in an attempt to do what is right and fair for all our citizens.”

Lawing was first elected to the Newton City Council in 1977, and she has served more than 20 years in unconsecutive terms. Her current term ends in 2015. Lawing serves or has served as a trustee of the Catawba County Historical Association, board member of the Downtown Newton Development Association, member of the Newton Appearance Commission, member of the Newton Festival and Events Committee, member of the Kiwanis Club and member of the Western Piedmont Council of Governments Policy Board.
