NEWTON, NC (October 21, 2014) -- The Newton Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a “Canned Food Drive” to benefit the Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry (ECCCM) Hunger Prevention Program. The campaign will run from November 3 to December 21.
Non-perishable food items accepted include canned fruits, canned soups, canned vegetables, boxes of grits, macaroni, rice, oatmeal, dried beans, and more.
The food collected will help local residents who may be disabled or handicapped, and those in need in the community. Last year's contribution total was 510 pounds of food. This year, the City hopes to surpass this total, further helping those in need throughout the community.
Donation locations include NewtonCity Hall, the Newton Recreation Department, and the Central Recreation Department. Hours for donation drop-off are: City Hall - Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; NewtonRecreationCenter - Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Central Recreation Center - Monday through Thursday 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Saturday 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. City offices will be closed for Thanksgiving on November 27-28.
