NEWTON, NC (Oct. 16, 2013) – City of Newton Mayor Anne P. Stedman was recognized Oct. 15 at the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM) annual conference for achieving the Practitioner level of the Local Elected Leaders Academy (LELA).
“As an elected representative of the citizens of Newton, I am committed to providing the best leadership possible as we face new economic challenges, a changing industrial landscape and technological advances,” Stedman said. “LELA offers learning opportunities that will help me successfully lead Newton into the future.”
Stedman attended the LELA Advanced Leadership Corps program in Chapel Hill from Sept. 22-27.
LELA is a partnership between the School of Government at the University of North Carolina, NCLM and Association of County Commissioners. The academy offers local elected officials the knowledge and skills needed to lead and govern their communities as they face today’s governing challenges.
Stedman was elected in 2003 as a Newton City Council member and was re-elected in 2005 and 2009. She was elected mayor in 2011. She is the owner and operator of The Trott House Inn Bed & Breakfast. Stedman remains engaged with the community through her service as a board member of Green Room Community Theatre, board member of Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry, board member of the Downtown Newton Development Association and board member of the Newton Human Relations Commission. Her past service includes service as the past chairman of the Newton Festival and Events Committee and member of the Newton Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee.
