Rec, CVCC offering quilting, needlework, carving, shag and painting classes

Newton (August 29, 2013) - The Newton Parks and Recreation Department and Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) proudly present eight classes which are sure to interest you or someone you know. Classes will be held at the Newton Recreation Center.

Quilting: Back to the Basics – You decide what size quilts and what pattern you want to make. The class, which is for beginner to intermediate students, will start with the basics and go from there. The fee for the class is $45 per person. The class session is from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Sept. 9 to Oct. 28. The instructor for the class is Mary Ann Parkhurst.

Quilting: Back to the Basics Workshop – This is a continuation of the Back to the Basics Quilting course for beginner to intermediate students.  The fee for the class is $25 per person. The class runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Nov. 4 to Nov. 25.

Needle Fun – This class will offer variety as participants will choose their needle type – a knitting needle, an embroidery needle or a crochet hook. This class is for beginner to intermediate students. The fee for the class is $45 per person. The class is offered from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, Sept. 10 to Oct. 29. The instructor for the class is Mary Ann Parkhurst.

Needle Fun Workshop – This is a continuation of the Needle Fun course for beginner to intermediate students.  The fee for the class is $25 per person. This class runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, Nov. 5 to Nov. 26. The instructor for this class is Mary Ann Parkhurst.

Bird & Duck Carving - Decorative – Participants in the class will learn the process of taking a block of wood and carving, sanding and painting it into a life-like bird or duck. The fee for the class is $50 per person. The class sessions are from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays, Sept. 11 to Oct. 30. The instructor for the class is Gene Parham.

Beginning Shag – Students will learn the dance of the South. Using the six count method, this course includes the basic shag step, female turn, male turn, chase, cuddle, pivot, the lead out and variations on these fundamental steps. By the end of the program, students will be able to dance comfortably at any shag dance event. The fee for the class is $55 per person. The class is held from 7 p.m.t o 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 24 to Oct. 22. The instructor for the class is Judy Boston.

Oil & Acrylic Painting – Students will start a new adventure with oil and acrylic painting. This class is designed for beginners and those wanting to improve their painting skills. Emphasis will be on color mixing, techniques, safety in using materials and learning to see color and composition. The fee for the class is $50. The class is offered from 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays, Sept. 12 to Oct. 31. The instructor for the class is Frances Bost.

Oil & Acrylic Painting Workshop – This is a continuation of the Oil and Acrylic Painting class. The fee for the class is $25 per person. This class is designed for beginners and those wanting to improve their painting skills. The class runs from 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays, Nov. 7 to Dec. 5. The instructor for the class is Frances Bost.
