NEWTON, NC (Aug. 28, 2013) – The Newton Fire Department promoted two firefighters/engineers to captain, noting their dedication and leadership to the fire service. William Russell Barlow will serve as the captain of A shift and William Troy Scott will serve as captain of C shift.
“These two have shown the desire and capability to serve in this position. These two are willing to direct and stand beside their fellow firefighters,” Newton Deputy Fire Chief Jimmy Martin said at the men’s pinning ceremony. “They will lead their firefighters in the safe operations of their daily duties so they may return to their families at the end of their shifts. This is one of the most important things an officer can do.”
In 2005, Barlow was among the first group of full-time firefighters hired by the City of Newton. He previously served as a firefighter with the St. Stephens, Hickory and Maiden fire departments. He also served as an EMT with Charlotte Medic and Caldwell and Catawba counties. He is a Level 2 instructor and Level 1 inspector.
Scott joined the Newton Fire Department in 2002. He started his fire service career in 1995 at St. Stephens and previously served at the Maiden Fire Department. He also worked as an EMT for Catawba County. He is a Level 2 instructor and Level 1 inspector.
“No matter the need or time of day, you respond to an incident or offer aid to anyone. This is a special calling for firefighters,” Martin said. “You respond with no regard to age, location, need or economic status. No other vocation is like that. It is something that comes from the heart and not something you get in return.”
