Newton Police spin; raise $9,100 for Special Olympics

NEWTON, NC (Aug. 12, 2013) – Officers from the Newton Police Department on Aug. 11, 2013 participated in the inaugural Special Olympics Spin-A-Thon, helping raise $9,100 for the Special Olympics. The Spin-A-Thon took place prior to the Soldiers Reunion Car Show and Cruisin’.

Twelve officers and two of their family members took part in the event, riding an average of 23 miles in less than an hour with the guidance of a spin instructor. The instructor and spin bikes were an in-kind donation by the Shuford YMCA of Conover. The sound system was an in-kind donation by Rent-A-Center of Newton.

The Newton Police Department surpassed its goal of raising $6,000 with the help of several local businesses who donated at least $500. Those businesses include Butch’s Service Center of Conover, Dr. Jerry Sowers Jr. General Dentistry, Dr. Dale Spencer of Hickory Dental Care, Huss Bail Bonds, Jim’s Wrecker and Storage, Redline Automotive, Skeet’s Auto Body Repair of Conover and Dr. Matt Pennell with Startown Veterinary Hospital.

The Newton Police Department would like to thank everyone who donated money or who sponsored an officer for the event. The police department will continue fundraising for Special Olympics by selling t-shirts for a short time. Anyone interested in purchasing a shirt may contact the Newton Police Department at 828-465-7430.
