Rec offering swimming lessons, softball tournaments

NEWTON, NC (May 21, 2013) – School is almost out and summer is just around the corner. Enjoy the warm weather by participating in activities hosted by the Newton Recreation Department. 

Men’s Softball Tournament

The Newton Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a Men’s Softball Tournament on Saturday, June 8 at Jacob Fork Park, 3730 NC 10 West. The double-elimination tournament will use ASA rules. There will be two home run hitters per game. Teams will be furnished ASA-approved .44 core/375 compression balls. The team finishing in first place will receive trophies, and the second-place team will receive t-shirts. The entry fee for the tournament is $135 per team. The tournament is limited to ten teams on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline to register is 9 p.m. Thursday, June 6. Swimming Lessons

The Newton Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring swimming lessons for youth ages 6-12 years at the Newton Swimming Pool, 23 South Brady Ave. Students will learn the fundamentals of breathing techniques and swimming strokes. An American Red Cross Certified Swimming Course Instructor will provide the swimming lessons. There are two four-day sessions running from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The first session runs June 17-20; the second session is July 29 through August 1.
