Police dept. offering free women's self-defense class

NEWTON, NC (March 6, 2013) – The Newton Police Department is offering a free women’s self-defense class from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 23 in the lower level of the Newton Recreation Center.

The course will offer information to women on increasing awareness about their surroundings and how to recognize and defend themselves from potentially dangerous situations. Attendees must sign a waiver to participate in the physical defense portion of the class.

“Self-defense classes are beneficial for women not only because they increase awareness, but women can learn ways to prevent potentially compromising situations,” Newton Police Department Lt. Lemuel Martin said.

Martin and Sgt. Spencer Cline are the class instructors. The class is limited to 25 people, and participants must be 16 years of age or older. The class is free to the public and lunch will be provided.
