Couple earns July 2012 “Yard of the Month” honor

NEWTON, NC (July 3, 2012) – The home and landscape of Byron and Carla Macijewski has earned the honor of “Yard of the Month” for July 2012. The award was presented by the Newton Appearance Commission.

Byron said he takes great pride in his yard, and works on his landscape for at least 30 minutes every day and about five hours every Saturday. In fact, his ultimate goal was to win the “Yard of the Month” honor.

“This is such an honor. Ever since we first moved in, I've been obsessed to win this award,” Byron said with a smile. “And I finally got it.”

The house, located on North Ashe Avenue, was built in 1917. The couple purchased the property two years ago, just after the interior had been remodeled. However, the yard left something to be desired.

“There was just a little bit of shrubbery when we bought it, so the very day after we moved in I bought plenty of flowers and shrubs and went to work,” he recalled.

Both Byron and Carla were born and reared in Catawba County, but had lived in Richmond, Virginia most recently until their move to Newton two years ago.

“This is Carla’s dream house, with the old style and the wrap-around porch,” Byron said. “We love it here.”

The City of Newton expresses its congratulations to Byron and Carla Macijewski for being selected for the July 2012 “Yard of the Month” award.

The Newton Appearance Commission is now accepting nominations for “Yard of the Month” through August. Selection will be based on attractive, well-maintained landscaping and overall aesthetics. For more information, contact the Newton Recreation Department at (828) 695-4317.
