Fire Department to Conduct Controlled Burn
NEWTON, NC (Feb. 13, 2019)—The Newton Fire Department will conduct a controlled burn on Northwest Boulevard on Saturday, Feb. 16.
Controlled burns are training exercises that allow firefighters to hone their skills for real emergencies. Several firefighting agencies from throughout the area have been invited to participate.
Beginning around 9 a.m. Feb. 16, firefighters will begin setting fires in a vacant house at 2616 Northwest Blvd. The fires will be extinguished and relit throughout the day. The exercise is expected to end during the afternoon. During the controlled burn, smoke will be visible throughout the area. Smoke will likely remain visible through the evening.
The controlled burn will be held at the future site of James River Equipment, a full-service equipment and tractor dealership scheduled to open this spring. The site was formerly occupied by Slimline Industries.
“Real-world training like this is crucial to ensuring our firefighters are prepared to effectively respond to actual dwelling fires, and we want to make sure the public isn’t alarmed when they see the smoke created by this important exercise” Newton Fire Chief Kevin Yoder said. “I would also like to thank James River Equipment for allowing us to conduct this controlled burn on their property.”
