Newton to Host Hike NC Events

NEWTON, NC (Oct. 19, 2017)—The Newton Parks and Recreation Department along with Blue Cross Blue Shield North Carolina are excited to be sponsoring two Hike NC events at Newton parks.

Mother Nature is calling, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina is making it easier to answer the call. As part of Blue Cross NC’s mission to improve the health and well-being of their customers and communities, they’re partnering with the North Carolina State Parks system and others to offer Hike NC, dozens of guided hikes ready to be explored and enjoyed throughout North Carolina.

Hikes are free, family-friendly and open to all ages, stages and levels. A trained guide leads each hike, making it easier for participants to enjoy the outdoors and explore some of the best natural beauty North Carolina has to offer. Two days of hiking are scheduled in Newton.

Jacob Fork Park Woodland Loop Trail
10 a.m-11:30 a.m. Oct. 21: The Woodland Loop Trail offers fun and adventure for hikers, trail runners and mountain bikers alike. The intermediate trail is 2.5 miles long starting from the paved parking lot or 2.25 miles long beginning at the trail division for bikers and walkers. The park is located at 3730 West NC Hwy. 10, Newton. Please park in the paved parking lot located in front of the restrooms and ball fields. The Woodland Trail Loop complements the 100-acre park that marks the convergence of the Jacob Fork and Henry Fork rivers into the South Fork River.

Heritage Trail Greenway
10 a.m.-noon Nov. 11: Planned and created for the purpose of exercise, a mode of alternative travel, and connectivity between neighborhoods, this greenway allows participants to enjoy the sounds and beauty of nature while spending time outdoors walking along Hildebrand Creek. The Heritage Trail Greenway is an easy three miles out and back, and is partially paved with natural compacted surfacing. Parking is available on West 7th Street, Newton, behind the Catawba County Maintenance Building.

All you need to enjoy these two great events are drinking water and comfortable walking or athletic shoes. You are invited to register your hike at and select your Hike NC event.
