Yard of the Month
NEWTON, NC (July 27, 2017) – The Newton Appearance Commission recently presented Jeff and Linda Henderson with the Yard of the Month honor for the month of July.
The Hendersons have lived in their home on West 7th Street for about five years, and during that time they’ve removed and replanted trees, bushes and shrubs to get their yard in tip-top shape.
“It’s all about maintenance,” Linda Henderson said. “You have to work on it all the time.”
The front and sides of the Hendersons’ corner lot are neatly lined with mondo grass and various shrubs and bushes in mulched beds. Around back, a deck leads to a lush lawn planted with Japanese maples, jasmine, hosta, and butterfly bushes. The spacious back yard features swings, wooden privacy screens, a weathervane, and a vintage bicycle repurposed into a planter.
Linda Henderson said that for beautiful summer flowers, she recommends Mandevillas.
“They’re the best flower to get during the summertime. They love the heat and you don’t have to water them that often,” she said.
Photos of the Hendersons’ lawn are available on the city of Newton’s Facebook page.
The Appearance Commission would like to congratulate all of the recipients of the 2017 Yard of the Month honor and thank everyone who works to keep Newton beautiful.
The commission is currently sponsoring the Paint the Town Red, White and Blue patriotic decorating contest. Residents and businesses within the city of Newton are invited to decorate their homes, yards, or businesses with a patriotic theme for the chance to win cash prizes. Registration is required by Aug. 9, and registration forms are available at www.newtonnc.gov/patriotic.pdf.
