Street Maintenance Division

The Street Maintenance Division maintains approximately 76 miles of city streets. The staff is divided into two teams, one team completes utility cuts and concrete repairs, while the other performs maintenance on roadways.

Street Construction/ Maintenance

Street Construction and Maintenance consist of the following components:

  • Repairing utility cuts

  • Repairing natural potholes

  • Cutting and trimming trees, limbs, and overgrowth

  • Removing obstructions from roadway causing danger to traffic such as trees, flooding, or debris from accidents.

  • Grading, scraping, and applying gravel to unpaved streets.

  • Sidewalk repair

Street Sweeping

The street sweeping truck runs on a scheduled route on all curb and gutter streets. The Downtown area is swept on a weekly basis. The street washing process immediately follows the street sweeping process. These trucks operate on a 5-day a week basis year round except in periods of inclement weather.

Right-of-Way Mowing

Crews mow during periods of warm weather to control weeds, grass and overgrowth. Two mowing tractors run scheduled routes in order to maintain the city's appearance and safety.

Leaf Collection

Leaf collection begins in late October or early November. The city is broken down into two quadrants. The North Quadrant is picked up one week, then the South Quadrant is picked up the following week. Leaves are collected every other week in your Quadrant.

Snow and Ice Removal

In the event of bad weather the City of Newton removes snow and ice using the following guidelines and priorities.

  • Responsibility

  • All City Streets not maintained by D.O.T.

  • Parking Lot and driveway entrances to the Police Dept., Fire Dept, City Hall and the Catawba County Emergency Medical Office Base on S. Brady Ave.

  • Parking Lots for other City facilities.

  • Sidewalks in the downtown area.

  • City cemeteries

  • City leased parking lots in N. Newton.

Removal Priorities

  • Parking Areas and D-Way entrances for city operated facilities.

  • S. Main Ave. from D. St. to 321.

  • S. College Ave. from D. St. to 321.

  • N. College Ave. from 11th St. north to the city limits.

  • S. Brady Ave. from A. St. to 321.

  • N. Brady Ave. from A. St. to 321.

  • N. Ashe Ave. from 4th St. to Boundary St.

  • A. St. from 321 to Caldwell Ave.

  • 27th St. from Main Ave. to 321.

  • 15th St. from Main Ave. to 321.

  • W. 1st St. from College to 321.

  • Caldwell Ave. from 11th St. to D. St.

  • E. 11th St. from Main to 1st St
