The
City of Newton Fire Department was started in 1886 with one
station and a handful of volunteers, the Newton Fire Company
provided fire protection to the citizens of Newton for 21 years
before becoming an official organization in 1907. After having
provided volunteer firefighting services for 19 years, the City
of Newton hired its first paid staff in 1926. The City of Newton
Fire Department is currently a fully paid Fire Department
consisting of full-time personnel, part-time personnel and
reserves. Firefighting staff includes certified Emergency Medical Technicians, and Confined
Space and Trench Rescue personnel. The City of Newton Fire
Department is the second largest fire department in Catawba
County and is responsible for preserving life and property for a
population of 19,200 in an area totaling 38.3 square miles.
The City of Newton Fire Department has undergone a tremendous
change is the last decade and has evolved into a highly
sophisticated department that has saved numerous lives and
reduced the severity of countless injuries and illnesses.
