The current tax rate is $.48 cents per
$100/valuation. The tax rate is set by the City Council
each year when the annual budget is prepared for the
fiscal year beginning July 1. Ad Valorem taxes fund over
one-third of the general government services with the
remainder coming from other taxes, user fees, and
utility revenues.
Newton's utilities include electric,
water and sewer services. Newton owns and operates its
own electric system. The costs of residential electric
service are maintained at rates competitive with private
utility companies, and water and sewer rates compare
favorably with other North Carolina municipalities.
Newton has been a "Public Power" community since 1896.
The Newton electric utility is locally controlled,
not-for-profit, and consumer owned. One of 70 plus utility
cities in North Carolina, Newton is a member of the
North Carolina Municipal Power Agency.
