The City of Newton operates under the council-manager form of government.  The governing body for the City is the City Council, which consists of a mayor, who serves a four-year term, and six councilmen, who serve four-year staggered terms.  The city manager is appointed by the City Council to supervise the activities of the various departments of city government.

Currently, the mayoral position is held by Robert Mullinax.  City Council consists of Mayor Pro Tem Anne Stedman, Wayne Dellinger, Tom Rowe, Mary Bess Lawing, Bill Lutz, and Robert C. Abernethy Jr..
