What does the City Council do?

The City Council enacts City policies and laws to govern city operations and the citizens of Newton. The City Council also has the responsibility to appoint a City Attorney.

City Council elections?

Members of the City Council are elected by the citizens at-large to serve a four year term. City Council members must reside within the city limits. Elections are held every two years to stagger the terms of office.

The Newton City Council meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm in the City Council Chambers-City Hall.

Agenda items are available for the public at the meeting. If you need a copy of the agenda prior to the meeting, please contact the City Clerk's office at (828) 695-4265. Any citizen wanting to speak on an item must sign in with the City Clerk prior to the meeting. If you want to address the City Council on other non-agenda items, you must make arrangements prior to the next meeting. If you want to be placed on the agenda, you must contact the City Manager at least seven (7) working days before the next meeting. All City meetings are open to the public.

All meetings are held in accessible facilities. Any person with a disability needing special accommodations should contact Glenn J. Pattishall, ADA Coordinator, at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled meeting.
